Do jejum de Ester.
C AP . C X V I.
On the thirteenth of this month falls the Fast of Esther [which is celebrated in remembrance of the fast that the people of Israel did at that said time. And although it does not say that they did it then, there is no doubt that they, who were brought nigh to death in such affliction, must have been fasting, supplicating and crying to God, as Moses our Teacher remained fasting as long as the battle with Amalek lasted. And seeing that we remember the succeeding miracle with holidays and feasting, so it is right that we should also keep in mind the tribulation so that we can better understand that afflictions and fasting are a sufficient means to secure pardon and that God will deliver us from the hands of our adversaries].
2. When Purim falls on Sunday, this fast is held on the Thursday. |
